In today's world, there is an increasing trend towards the use of renewable, cheap and readily available resources in the production of a wide variety of products. In this perspective ligno-cellulosic feedstock and other organic wastes from agro-industrial manufactures represent costless materials that may be transformed through bio-based processes, exploiting microbes, to yield biofuels, fine chemicals, or other building-blocks for the synthesis of high value added products.
Universitą degli studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia intends to play a key role in the transition towards the Bio-based economy and foster Research and Development as well as technology transfer in this domain. For this reason it has joined the European Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI) and established the bio-Based industries working group, gathering researchers from different research domains and boosting a set of unique competences in several disciplines related to the bio-based economy, ranging from Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Engineering, Agri-food sciences.
